Alanna Cavanagh for Penguin's Puffin Classics Series

Alanna Cavanagh's trademark cropped figures are popping up everywhere!  Recently Alanna illustrated the cover of Awake and Dreaming.  The cover image sends out a gentle yet provocative invitation to join Theo (the main character) on her journey.  This is one of 4 new editions to become part of Penquin Canada's Puffin Classics Series, where renowned Canadian illustrators breath new life into classic titles.  Art director Lisa Jager did a great job unifying all the covers which you can see on the CBC Books website, where a new edition is being rolled out each day.  Alanna's cover debuted earlier this week.  You can read more about the interview with her here.

Sneak peek:  Rémy Simard, working with editor, Alison Kooistra, has brought Anna Fienberg's words to life in Annick Press' latest Graphic Novel, Horrendo's Curse.  Horrendo and his young friends enter into the dangerous world of swashbuckling pirates, where they are captured and worked to the bone.  In the meantime, they are even busier as they conjure up their cunning escape plan!  We're sure you'd love to find out what happens next, but I'm afraid you're just going to have to wait until the fall of 2013 when Horrendo's Curse hits bookstores!  More to come...

Doug Martin for Harlequin: Scary Stuff

Doug Martin continues in his rather surreal painting style for the Cozy Mystery series for Harlequin, working with Sean Kapitain, art director.  Scary Stuff by Sharon Fiffer is a story that takes place on Halloween night, when antiques picker Jane Wheel discovers an estate worth killing for that involves unraveling family secrets and revealing evil ghosts eager to banish her to the afterlife.  Doug's meticulous attention to detail includes some eerie elements that add to the tension of the cover image:  the twisted stems on the jack o lanterns, the scary face suggested in fence post, the distressed clapboard on the old mansion and the foreboding silhouette of the raven.

I think we've all encountered the 'haunted' mansion in the hood and accepted the dare to ring their doorbell... where will you be tonight on this Hallowed eve?
