Ever wonder how an artist sets up their studio? What motives them? What inspires their creativity? In this studio spotlight Illustrator Greg Stevenson shares how he gets set up to create consistently exceptional illustration.
Where is your studio?
In my apartment, taking up half of my living room. I also have room for a large easel when need be.
What is a must-have for your work space?
A Hermann Miller chair (15 yrs old), office desk, and some natural, northern lighting.
How have you made your space functional for your process?
The desk and chair take up one of the corners of the room, with additional space, bookshelf and storage space for art supplies.
Tell us a bit about your computer set up.
27” 2013 Imac, with side scanner, keyboard and back-up storage devices take up half of my desk space, leaving scant, but adequate working space on the desk itself (for drawing, inking, and general office usage).
What ‘decorates’ your space?
Mostly my own ink drawings are displayed around the room to keep the room functional, as well as show off my work (to further inspire me).
What do you do (if anything) to set the mood for work?
Usually I’ll draw the blinds, and turn on the lights to turn it into a working studio space, but when not working I turn the room into more of a living room.
What inspirational items are a must for your space?
I have many small sculptures and gifts I’ve collected, as well I like to have music or podcasts playing in the background when I work.
What if anything would you change about your space? Any dream setups that you aspire to?
A larger room with more storage space as well as more bookshelves would also be welcome.
