  The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association is pleased to announce the finalists of the 2013 Alberta Magazine Awards and we are delighted that this cover art created by Greg Stevenson for art director Kim Larson, is one of the award winning covers.

Thom Sevalrud: Big Data

  The Wikipedia definition of Big Data is:  "a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools..."

Thom Sevalrud has a way with taking just this type of complexity and in his very unique visual vocabulary communicating the idea clearly, like no other.  That's why  Brian Donahue of Be Design called upon Thom to illustrate Why Big Data is a Big Deal for Macalester Today.  Brian is also a big fan of Thom's hand lettering so he also asked him to illustrate the headline for this feature as well.

Tim Zeltner for Yankee Magazine

Tim Zeltner illustrated this fantasy winter wonderland for a travel feature, The Town of Our Dreams, art directed by Yankee's Lori Pedrick.  From snow covered rolling hills, quaint homes, picture-perfect shops to horse drawn sleigh rides, Tim created this fictitious place called NewEnglandville--the town of New England's dreams!

Greg Stevenson illustrates around the clock!

Ever have one of those days where you can't stop thinking about food?  Literally.  Greg Stevenson's hand lettering and flowing line technique made him the perfect choice for this conceptual piece, art directed by Jane Edwards Griffin (Griffin Design).  The article 'Food for Thought' for Simon Fraser University's alumni publication, aq Magazine, talks about a massive renovation to the SFU dining hall and café in response to a survey in which 6,000 students were in favor of:  wider variety, international flavors and healthier foods available around the clock.

Gary Alphonso for American Lawyer Magazine

  Joan Ferrell, art director at ALM, needed something corporate with a bit of a retro twist for an article commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the firm, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.  Gary Alphonso's powerful style was the perfect choice to illustrate a retro metal stamp logo showing the OHS's Global Operations Center depicting the converted metal stamping plant in Wheeling West Virginia, which they call home.

Janice Kun for Royal Ontario Museum

Art director Tara Winterhalt chose Janice Kun to create a double page spread illustration for the article Threads That Bind which first appeared in ROM, the magazine of the Royal Ontario Museum, Summer 2012 issue.  The story is a true account of an archaeologist's search for human origins which became deeply personal.  Janice's pictographic method of weaving the elements of the story together is reminiscent of it's ancient references.

Alanna Cavanagh for The Globe and Mail

"I thought of her immediately when I heard Ian Brown was writing about men's shoes" said The Globe's Design Editor Cinders McLeod, on selecting Alanna Cavanagh to illustrate the article My Cinderella Season, for the Focus section of The Globe, Saturday October 13th.  We love the Harris Tweed pants she collaged into one of the illustrations.  A typical pose one might assume whilst reading The Globe, don't you think?

Margaret Lee for AAA Traveler Magazine

Lymari Acevedo, art director for AAA Traveler, repurposed an image created by Margaret Lee exploring the musical heritage from Nashville to New Orleans.

Thom Sevalrud: Journal for the Norwegian Medical Association

Art Director Emma Dalby commissioned Thom Sevalrud for a third cover for the award winning Journal.  His masterful conceptual skills communicate to the scientific community Leukemia's treatments and how to identify the disease through family history and biological markers.

Gary Alphonso for Northeastern Law Magazine

Art director Mark Gabrenya, chose Gary's powerfully evocative style for this Northeastern Law Magazine cover to illustrate the revisiting of U.S. labor rights after 75 years. [pinterest]

Phil for Country Gardens

Phil, working with design director Nick Crow, created this illustration for Country Gardens' fall 2012 Slow Lane column.  His impressionistic style tells the story about the migration pattern of the black feathered, white beaked Coot, and a real life altercation between 30 of them encountering a hungry bald-eagle, during a brief stop over on their way south.  Phil brings drama to the illustration with the menacing shadow of the eagle, contrasted by the calm and collected demeanor of the Coot, who ultimately see their way to victory.

Sarah Beetson: Interview with Russell Brand

Sarah Beetson was illustrated a double page spread for UK Magazine Nuts', interview with the provocative Russell Brand.  Below is her sketch with type and the final art.  We think her 'out there' approach to the illustration is a perfect send-up for Mr. Brand! For a peek at the process below is Sarah's art at the rough stage.

John Webster in Covet Garden Magazine

John and his friend Stephanie Power were recently featured in the lovely Covet Garden decor magazine.  Their spaces are perfectly aligned with Covet's interest in environments that have not been styled by  interior decorators.  Both John and Stephanie's artistic esthetic is reflected to a 'tea' in their uniquely delightful homes.  John says, "The best part of the house is that for the first time, my apartment feels like a collage--my art and way of living have become one."  Look at John's portfolio here and see if you can find some of his "curious curios" living in his art. Eili-Kaija Kuusniemi: 'Sunny'

The lightness and unique use of color in  Eili-Kaija's watercolour style evoke a sunny summer afternoon on a beach.  Perfect for an article  about staying safe in the sun, done for the Finnish magazine 'Apu'.

Thom Sevalrud for Macalester Today

Thom's conceptual style was called upon by Brian Donahue, of Be Design, to illustrate the article Beyond the Auto for the Summer Issue of Macalester Today.  The article has Macalester College experts weigh in on the future of travel, predicting that bikes, buses and your own two feet, are the transit options that will reign supreme in the cities of tomorrow.  Thom's somewhat futuristic approach to the art brings this discussion to life beautifully.

Mark Hoffmann for Macalester Today

Mark Hoffmann was asked by art director Brian Donahue of Be Design, to illustrate a feature article on 'Food's Future' for Macalester Today's summer issue.  Macalester College  alumni weighed in on organic farming and food technology debates.  The combination of Mark's 'organic' art (often painted on recycled wood), along with his brilliant ability to communicate hard-hitting ideas with wit, made him a great fit for this assignment.  Brian was a great supporter of the project, and encouraged the realization of Mark's art becoming the first ever  illustrated cover for the magazine.

Greg Stevenson for Nexus

Recently, Greg was asked by the University of Toronto's law magazine Nexus, to create 3 photo illustrations for their contributors page.  Using supplied photography, which lacked a consistency, the photo-illustration technique applied, brought a unique continuity to the contributors page.  An interesting solution to a recurring problem encountered by art directors.

Monika Melnychuk for New Jersey Monthly

Monika was asked by New Jersey Monthly to contribute her expressive narrative style, to a serious issue around social ostracizing and bullying in NJ. Under New Jersey's strict new anti-bullying law, any school employee that hears of a bullying incident must tell the principal, which starts the clock running on an investigation.  Gregory Crippin art directed the piece, which appeared in NJ Monthly's May 2012 issue.

Tracy Walker for St. Anthony Messenger

Tracy Walker illustrated this piece for an article entitled “Blood of Life” which appeared in the July 2012 issue of St. Anthony Messenger, art directed by Jeanne Kortekamp. The story is about a woman with leukemia whose life is saved by her newborn baby’s umbilical cord stem cells. With her delicate and yet graphic approach, Tracy weaves the story in a conceptual manner where colors, textures and symbols all speak to this very poignant story.

Sarah Beetson for US Airways Magazine

For those Mad Men fans out there, this story should help you bring back the golden age of the cocktail in style!  We think Ann Harvey, Art Director at Pace Communications, chose the perfect artist, when she asked Sarah Beetson to illustrate the splish splash zing of the 60's Essential Summer Cocktails!
