Gary Alphonso for Canada Post: Unveiling New Community Mailboxes

In response to the shrinking demand for snail mail, Canada Post has begun to phase in an expansion of it's Community Mailboxes (CMB's) vs door-to-door delivery.  The process of developing the CMB's was carefully executed with a strategy that involved lots of consumer input through focus testing at various stages in the development.  Canada Post was looking for the perfect CMB to take it's customers into the 21st Century.  One of the key criteria for the new CMB's was to develop an art wrap that would hopefully work as an anti-graffiti barrier.  This is where the call for Gary Alphonso's illustration talents came in.

Working with the team at Ove Brand | Design, headed up by creative director Peter Baker, Gary Alphonso was given an open creative brief as they embarked on an exploration of various abstract directions.  The art evolved into a beautiful ethereal design that incorporated the maple leaf (a ubiquitous Canadian symbol), floating as if being carried by a gentle wind.   The process was a real contest but in the end, we are proud to report that Gary Alphonso's floating leaf design was among the most popular in focus testing.

Thom Sevalrud for 88 Scott

The vision for 88 Scott :  "These are the dreamers, the planners, the creators. ... In the earliest planning stages of 88 Scott, fifteen of the country's leading architects, planners and developers were invited to collaborate in a unique process. Their mandate was to create a bold vision for an exceptional, new landmark condominium building..."

In keeping with this creative approach, art by nine local i2i artists was reproduced in large format and presented on hoarding panels (divided by inspirational quotations).  The idea was for the developer to support local talent while beautifying the site during the construction phase of development.  The images were chosen to represent the many facets of life in the immediate community:  green space, culture, recreation, shopping, entertainment etc.

Over the coming weeks we'll bring you pics of the other panels, but we start today with Thom Sevalrud's.  It's fantastic to see the art at this size!  If you have a chance, pop down and check out the larger-than-life art at 88 Scott in the heart of downtown Toronto.  To see more of Thom's art go here.

Gary Alphonso for Tim Hortons

Everyone loves Tim Hortons coffee and doesn't everybody notice the art they use on the Holiday cup every year?  The answer is a resounding 'Yes', isn't it?

Commissioned by Tim Hortons' branding and design agency, *PIGEON, Gary Alphonso illustrated the art for Tim Hortons' classic holiday campaign! Working with the Pigeon team, the art came together beautifully and was applied to the hot drink cups, bakery bags and boxes.

Everyone was thrilled with how it turned out and we are proud to share with you Gary's art and a few pics of the finished products.

Katy Dockrill for National Drapery

When art director Lila Graham first contacted us to work on the new website she was designing for National Drapery, it was an exciting opportunity for Katy Dockrill to bring her flair for sewing and love of home decor to an illustration assignment!  The new ND website was the inspirational vision of Natalie Hartman, who was a delight to work with.  Visit the ND homepage and see how Lila and Katy literally brought Natalie's vision to life here.

The new website design also included a series of drawings to highlight the many custom products National Drapery offers.  Katy adores creating for surface design, so when Natalie asked her to include an indication of patterns to depict various textiles and bring some flair to these more technical illustrations, she was happy to oblige.  The result?  These little gems...we've combined a few of our faves here:

Monika Melnychuk for Naked Flock

i2i Art was approached by cider maker Jonathan Hull of Applewood Winery to have Monika Melnychuk create new packaging for their Hudson Valley Hard Cider, which was to be relaunched under the new name, Naked Flock.  The product name was inspired by a very colorful, visual folk tale about a pastor who plants some poppy seeds and a flock of geese who eat the poppies and fall into a deep sleep.   Thought dead the geese are plucked for their feathers--hence the name Naked Flock.  Read the whole tale on Applewood Winery's website.

Monika says, "This is one of my favorite projects to date.  And the first project I have been hired to do the illustration and design as well.  Naked Geese?  The story is hilarious, so when I approached the project I wanted to create something funny, but a bit edgy as well."

Monika designed the logo and labels and illustrated all three skus of Naked Flock Hard Cider:  Original, Draft and Pumpkin.
